205D tube type was originally developed by Western Electric in the early part of 20th century. It’s a direct heated triode tube like 300B, but with lower output and extremely accurate low voltage amplification, greatest fidelity and linearity across all frequencies in telephony. Like 300B, 205D tube wasn’t originally designed for hi-fi use. Western Electric didn’t license 205D use to any other companies, so this tube model was never widely used and hence extremely hard to find today. A pair of New-old-stock WE205D original tubes can fetch over $2000 per pair on the hi-fi market today and it’s extremely rare to come by.
Because of its extreme accuracy and great fidelity, 205D tubes have found their new amplification today in extreme high end tube pre-amplifiers.
